Simply put, AVID is a national organization that focuses on college preparedness and readiness through a multitude of means. In the AVID Elective class, students receive daily instruction and support to prepare them for college from a trained AVID Elective teacher. AVID impacts students school wide as academic strategies like writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organizational skills, and critical reading (WICOR ) are taught in all classes by teachers who have been trained to use AVID strategies in their specific content areas.
The AVID elective:
- Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success through a multitude of means including discussions, critical thinking, and technology.
- Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
- Creates a positive peer group for students
- Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination

AVID Essentials
WICOR:
WICOR is an vital component of the skills that AVID students learn. WICOR is composed of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Critical Reading, These are the skills that the AVID classes incorporate into almost every lesson. These skills also teach students to become successful in every subject or class. Many teachers at PSHS use WICOR strategies in their everyday lessons as well.
Tutorials:
Every Tuesday and Thursday AVID students participate in tutorials, which is a type of homework/study help. Students bring in questions that they have trouble understanding from their homework, tests, or notes and fill out a special form called a Tutorial Request Form (TRF). Students are then grouped into similar academic topics based off of their TRF question. College tutors come in on these days to help facilitate these study groups to make sure that each student goes through the tutorial process of presenting their question, asking for help from their peers, and working through their problem together. Students are required to reflect on the tutorial process for the day at the end of each tutorial.
Team building/bonding
AVID is an elective designed for the student to take all four years of high school. Since students spend four years with the same peers, it is fundamental that each class develops close relationships with each other, the tutors, and the teacher. AVID is designed to have a strong family feel, where the student can feel comfortable and come to anyone within the program with their conflicts, achievements, or concerns.
Every Friday, students participate in a team building game or activity that is meant to strengthen each class's relationship with each other.
